If you’re moving home soon with your beloved dog 🐶, make sure you get a separate box ready with the things your dog will need on moving day.

Here’s a list of everything to include (save for later):

➡️Food/treats and food bowl
➡️Water and travel water bowl
➡️Favourite toys
➡️Blanket
➡️Lead/harness
➡️Poop bags
➡️Dog coat (if winter)
➡️White cotton sheet to cover crate and protect your dog from the sun
➡️Cool collar and cool mat (if summer)
➡️Flannels/towels

This box should be kept separate from your other packing as you will bring it with you on moving day.

1️⃣ Book any services you need well in advance. Summer is a very popular time for moving and things can get booked up very quickly !

2️⃣ Plan the timing of your summer holiday carefully. It’s best to avoid booking right around the time of your move in case there are any hiccups

3️⃣ Pack early in the morning and late in the evening (avoid the peak times)

4️⃣ Keep windows shut and blinds down during peak times (block the sun out otherwise it will get far too hot!)

Make it super clear to the removals company in advance exactly what you would like removed. This includes:

👉🏻lifting of any carpets
👉🏻removal of curtains
👉🏻dismantling of any furniture I.e tables/cabinets
👉🏻dismantling of large equipment, as the removals company will need to get them through the doors
👉🏻any items that need removing from the loft and whether you have a ladder for access

All these things will affect the price and duration of your move. The last thing you want is for the removals company to show up and you’ve forgotten a whole bunch of stuff in the attic.

1️⃣ Look at removal companies on the British Association of Removers (BAR). ✅Members of this association are required to maintain certain standards, so you are less likely to have an issue

2️⃣ Get at least 3 quotations from different removals companies. This will allow you to compare the services available and prices they offer. 💰These can vary widely

3️⃣ Ask for at least 3 references from each company. 📞Follow these up by phoning previous clients and asking about their experience

4️⃣ Watch out for sales companies. 🧾Some removals companies are just sales companies who will come to your home to give you a quotation. They then sell the quotation to a fully-fledged removal company to carry out the move. It will then be a different company showing up on moving day, one which you know nothing about !

Moving requires a lot of co-ordination and planning with different people, so your job is to be SUPER clear with all your instructions to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Here are 8 top tips you can use to prevent miscommunication 👇🏻

1️⃣ Call services (removals company/solicitor/locksmith etc) well in advance to ensure they have plenty of notice

2️⃣ Be very specific with exactly what you need

3️⃣ Check you’re stating the correct address, date and times

4️⃣ Follow up with an email so the conversation is documented in writing, especially the cost of services. This way nobody can try and charge you a higher price later on

5️⃣ A couple days before a service is due (I.e removals company showing up to your house), call them again as a reminder to re-confirm that they’re definitely showing up at the correct time and address

6️⃣ Keep everyone updated if there are any changes to your plans. I.e if the time you’re showing up to your new house changes, don’t forget to tell the locksmith to show up at the correct time

7️⃣ If somebody is becoming unresponsive, don’t wait it out until the last minute. Follow up to see if there is any more news. If there’s been no communication for a while, don’t expect them to just turn up on the day

8️⃣ Never make any assumptions about anything

1️⃣ Keep habits the same (especially walks and meal times). Animals are a creature of habit and when things start moving around in the house, this may upset them. Keeping their same routine can reassure them

2️⃣ Visit your new area with your dog before moving in and if you get a chance, take them inside the property. This will help your dog get familiar with the new area ahead of time
